Trab Abjad (white dust) is Mejlak's first book, written when he was still a very young student. The book was published by PIN in 1999 and is illustrated by Victor Pulis.

"On his father's signal, he was sure to stretch out his neck so that through the round mica glass window he could catch a final glimpse of the eastern side of Gozo. That way, high up as he was, he could see the quiet bay opposite Ghar Farfett. His friends had told him that at about that time they would be there swimming. He managed to observe the bay for a few seconds. And, as he wiped a tear which had just budded in his eye, he turned to his mother and said, "Ma, how long before we arrive?"

I got to know Pierre Mejlak a few years ago. He was still a young boy, and if I remember correctly, he had written to me to tell me how much he enjoyed reading my books. I immediately realised that Pierre was a boy of special qualities: serious and meticulous in everything he does and always brimming with fresh ideas which he would fulfil with the greatest enthusiasm. He had already begun to compile and publish the little magazine Il-Fwieha tan-Narcisa, a modest pamphlet which later evolved into a thoroughly interesting publication. It didn't take long for Pierre and I to become good friends, and the more I got to know him the more I began to appreciate that the qualities I mentioned were not only the product of youthful zest but an essential part of his character, and continued to develop and improve over time.

It thus came as no surprise when Pierre wrote to me less than two years ago to tell me that he had been writing a story for children. As soon as he completed it he was quick to send me a copy, and as I started reading the first few pages, I suddenly and completely forgot that I was reading the work of a 14-year-old boy. I was immediately struck by the details of the plot, conceived with the greatest accuracy, the very authentic setting and atmosphere of the tale, the light and sprightly rhythm from one chapter to the next… and above all, the truly splendid use of Maltese!

In Pierre, I see all the potential for a great writer.
