Meta Nstabu l-Angli (2002)

For many years the angels remained one next to the other... hidden in the dark... waiting for it to occur to someone to take the painting down. Those who wanted to find them could not; those who had never thought of meeting them discovered them, and were reeled into a world of adventure.

Meta Nstabu l-Angli (when the angels were found) is a novel written in an accessible and fresh style for children who are used to fast, pacy adventures. The story revolves around a small group of friends, in the 12 to 14-year-old bracket, who are unwittingly landed in trouble when a routine domestic chore reveals a set of antique angel-statues. Those who found them were definitely not looking for them. Those who were frantically searching for them, on the other hand, will wipe away anything and anyone in their path to get to the statues...

Meta Nstabu l-Angli has an added asset of being illustrated in full colour by Greta Borg Carbott, in a modern lively style particularly well-suited to the story.
The writing, the story, the illustrations, as well as a high-quality professional presentation by Merlin Library's production team, have all resulted in a superb package, one which will surely make Meta Nstabu l-Angli a milestone in Maltese children's literature of the 21st century.

extracts
"But as she was dusting the centre of the painting, she could feel an empty space under the cloth, and to the great surprise of herself and her brother, two holes suddenly appeared where there should have been two buttons of De Pasqua's suit. Two small holes, the width of a finger. One under the other. You could hardly even notice them as they totally matched the rest of the buttons on the suit, the only difference being that instead of black paint, there was darkness.

"Heavens, that's strange!" exclaimed Claire in surprise, as she inserted her finger into the top hole. "Why would they have made the painting like this?"
"Definitely not for nothing."

***

There they are. The angels are still there: some waving a crown of flowers, some playing the trumpet of judgment, some with a globe in their lap, some with a book, some with one thing and some with another. And few are the people who ever even begin to imagine the frantic events they went through, and how they could now have been collecting dust in the bureau of some modest little palace in the heart of Marseille.
