Enciklopedija ghat-Tfal (2005)

The book is a first in its genre: an exhaustive, one-volume children's encyclopedia in Maltese. Organised thematically, it covers most topics children would want to look up. The Enciklopedija includes sections on planet Earth, animals and plants, the human body, history, ways of life, science, technology, space and geography. The last section includes flags of countries of the world, detailed maps of all the continents as well as facts and figures on earth and space. The inclusion of countries' names in Maltese is undoubtedly a very convenient tool.

The Encyclopedia answers such questions, in Maltese, as "Why does it get dark at night?", "Why is the Royal Opera House in Valletta in ruins?", "What is a tsunami?", "How are babies born?", "Why were castles built?", "How do earthquakes happen?"

Printed in hardback format and lavishly illustrated in full colour throughout, this project was made possible through Merlin's collaboration with leading UK children's publisher Usborne. High-quality illustrations, diagrams and photography are a hallmark of this book.

Mejlak, already known to the Maltese reading public for his works Trab Abjad, Meta Nstabu l-Angli, as well as for his Maltese adaptation of Stejjer mill-Bibbja, has produced a fine text - fully updated to include events such as the December 2004 tsunami - that takes the burden out of reading a work of non-fiction. The flowing, almost conversational, tone makes dipping into the various sections and subjects truly enjoyable.

Children will also find suggestions for extra activities linked to the subjects being discussed, as well as references to Maltese situations where applicable. Science pages also include step-by-step instructions for simple and safe experiments that illustrate in practice the topic under review.

An added bonus of Enciklopedija ghat-Tfal is the existence of a website, linked to the book project, with freely downloadable activities, quizzes and images taken directly from the book. This makes it ideal not only for an interactive approach to reading non-fiction, but also for obtaining colour images for use in projects without infringing copyright laws through photocopying.

"Reading a book like this in your own language fills you with pride" - Sergio Grech, In-Nazzjon
